Amanda Hoskin is now well known for her sumptuous paintings of the Cornish Coastline which are developed as a result of many hours spent walking in and observing this rich landscape. Her long-term physical engagement with this environment provides her with a depth of knowledge which is both intellectually succinct and emotionally fluent.
What you see in a painting by Amanda Hoskin is her vision of her journey and this vision is not the vision of a visitor, it is the vision of a native of this landscape.
Her paintings are developed in her studio from sketches and notes that are made 'on location' throughout the year, at different times of day and in all weather conditions.
When it comes to the visual interpretation of these various moods Amanda has developed a visual grammar of gesture, colour and tone that in combination describes the way that light is reflected by different surfaces. Her paintings are more than landscape alone they are moments from a journey captured through the skilled use of oil paint applied with painstaking precision and breathtaking abandon. |
